Steering Wheel

Removal

Align the front wheels straight ahead. Loosen the steering wheel bolt with a breaker bar.

When loosening the bolt do not use the steering lock to prevent the wheel from rotating, get a helper to firmly hold the wheel while you tighten it.

KEY
1. STEERING WHEEL BOLT

You can usually remove the steering wheel by firmly pulling it with two hands, It usually helps if you loosen it by pulling it backwards, forwards and rocking it side to side with your hands in a number of positions on the rim. If you are patient it will usually come off without too much of a struggle.

Be careful not to hit yourself in the face with the steering wheel, they almost always come off suddenly without warning.

If the steering wheel will still not move, you will have to use a puller.

Install a steering wheel puller on the steering wheel. Free the steering wheel from the steering column shaft by turning the pressure bolt.

Note these items when removing the steering wheel:

  • Do not tap on the steering wheel or the steering column shaft when removing the steering wheel.
  • If you thread the puller bolts into the wheel hub more than five threads, the bolts will hit the SRS cable reel and damage it. To prevent this, install a pair of jam nuts five threads up on each puller bolt.

Refitting

Before installing the steering wheel, make sure the front wheels are aligned straight ahead, then centre the cable reel. If you taped the SRS cable reel before removing it it will already be in the correct position so simply remove the tape.

If the cable reel has become mis-aligned, you will need to reset it. Do this by first rotating the cable reel clockwise until it stops. Then rotate it counter clockwise approximately two turns. The arrow mark on the cable reel label point should point straight up.
